What does a labor/birth doula do?
A labor/birth doula provides physical and emotional support, education, and advocacy to women/birthing individuals before, during, and after childbirth. A labor/birth doula does NOT perform medical tasks, give medical advice, or replace any of your medical team (midwives, doctors, nurses, etc).
Before Birth:
Discuss the birth process
Help to form a birth plan(s)
Discuss options so you can make informed opinions
Teach comfort measures/coping techniques
Help prepare the partner
24/7 text support for any questions or concerns that may arise
During Labor & Delivery:
Offer physical support (massage, counter pressure, etc)
Suggest labor positions
Offer reassurance and encouragement
Explain medical terms and procedures to ensure you understand what is happening
Help you communicate your preferences to medical staff
Take pictures (optional)
Postpartum:
Initial breastfeeding support
Meet with you one last time to answer any questions/check in, and provide more emotional support
Why do I need to have prenatal appointments in a doula package?
The prenatal appointments are both a way for Kara to get to know you and your birth preferences, as well as you to get educated on childbirth, coping mechanisms, natural pain measures, and more. The prenatal appointments are very comprehensive and have a specific layout, but can also be customized based on the knowledge you already have about childbirth and postpartum, or your preferences for learning. Kara is always willing to work with you to ensure you are as prepared as possible for this huge transition.
*If you are a second-time parent, prenatals are still necessary, but the topics may be modified.
